- A cracked, broken, or chipped tooth — especially if it is painful or has sharp edges.
- Swelling in your face, jaw, or gums — swelling can indicate a spreading infection that needs prompt treatment.
- A lost filling or crown — the exposed tooth is vulnerable and often sensitive.
- Bleeding that will not stop — after an injury or extraction.
- An abscess — a painful, pimple like bump on the gums is an infection that will not resolve on its own.

- Pick up the tooth by the crown — the part you chew with. Do not touch the root.
- If it is dirty, rinse it gently with water. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue.
- If possible, place the tooth back in its socket and hold it there gently.
- If you cannot reinsert it, keep the tooth moist in a cup of milk or tucked inside your cheek.
- Call us immediately. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if treated within an hour.
